teenager. today they sent a letter out to parents letting us know what happened. tonight a father tells us his anyone is in describable. family and friends of 17-year- old raymond justice gathered for a quiet vigil in front of his home. he raised raymond as a single father. after seeing combat in vietnam, he never thought he would experience the horror of trying to save his own son on the streets of oakland. >> this is blood right here. i said that with the police, give him mouth to mouth resuscitation and his last breath came and i knew he was dead. >> reporter: last night around 6:30 he told his neighbors raymond ran to his home after he was shot at a nearby bus station. there was an altercation before the shooting. >> she was working with him on some of his homework and he was on his way home from that. >> the principal from the high school told us raymond had been receiving tutoring at oakland high shortly before the shooting. he was a junior with a 3.3 grade point average and planned to attend college. >> it's tough. i mean, you know, he is a kid that had a bright future. >> reporter:

for the first debate. jerry brown and meg whitman let us see their different viewpoints as they clashed on issues. claudine wong has more on last night's spirited debate. >> reporter: both candidates are claiming victory. both candidates went on the attack. both candidates tried to convince voters that they can handle this job. now, this debate at uc davis was the first of three debates. there's another one right around the corner. you can bet this is being picked apart. california certainly facing a lot of controversial issues from immigration to the death penalty to the budget crisis. all of that was on the table yesterday. whitman apologized for forgetting to vote in the past election, saying no one is more embarrassed than her. she did not apologize for putting $119 million of her own money in this campaign. >> the labor unions and jerry brown have been joined at the hip for 40 years. my view is putting jerry brown in charge of putting jerry brown -- of the unions is like putting count dracula in charge of the blood bank. >> reporter: people we spoke with say whitman appeared to be

. anne makovec is at san quentin prison in marin county to tell us why. >> reporter: if the plan that was in effect on monday would have stuck, albert greenwood brown would be dead right now but he is alive behind me at san quentin this morning because of a decision by a federal judge last evening. brown would have been california's first execution in almost five years, but judge fogel suspended the execution until he finishes reviewing a lawsuit against california's lethal injection procedure. concerns that it's cruel and unusual punishment. if the first of three drugs administered doesn't work properly, the inmate could suffer extreme pain from the third drug which stops the heart. the family of brown's victim just wants it over with. here's her brother speaking about what it was like after his 15-year-old sister disappeared. >> i remember getting in the truck with my father and...
